After going undefeated in their first 10 games of the 2015 season, the No.1-ranked Shorewood T-Birds got their biggest scare of the season Wednesday as the Mountlake Terrace Hawks led by a single run going to the bottom of the seventh inning.
But Shorewood isn’t the top 3A prep baseball team in the state for no reason.
The T-birds extended their unbeaten streak to 11 as they scored twice in their final at-bat and defeated the Hawks 3-2 in a Wesco 3A South matchup at Meridian Fields in Shoreline.
Terrace has taken a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning off a Zayn Phillips RBI-double that rolled to the wall in deep right center field, scoring teammate Ben Reijonen. But last inning heroics by the T-Birds snatched away the Hawks’ lead and chance for a victory.
“We leave the park feeling like we should have won that game,” said Terrace Head coach Andrew Watters.
Shorewood tied the game 2-2 in the seventh when T-Bird Brendan O’Brien slid under Terrace catcher Nolan Takeya who had to leap to handle a high throw from third baseman Jaden Yackley. The T-Bird’s next batter Arthur Pate followed with a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Max Wagner from third for the winning run.
The loss was a heartbreaker for Terrace as the squad had one-run leads twice in the ballgame. In the second inning the Hawks had taken a 1-0 advantage off an RBI-single by Michael Hunt.
Terrace also had a chance for more runs in the fourth inning when Reijonen was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then was moved to third with no outs when Phillips blooped a single just inside the right field foul line. But the opportunity died after Hawk Adam Lorraine flied out to center and Hunt lined into an unassisted double play.
“I think that we could have played better and I think that we missed opportunities to execute,” Watters said. “So I think if that we can get those things in line for ourselves we can put more runs on the board and we’re not in that situation at the end.”

Terrace pitcher Raiden Silva was saddled with the loss as the senior came in to pitch the seventh inning in relief. Hawk starter Jesse Prothero has opened the game with an impressive six innings, giving up no earned runs, striking out one and walking just one.
“Jesse did a really good job,” Watters said. “That was a really big start for him. He has struggled for a couple of starts now, but to see him rebound and get it done today was good.”
Shorewood starter Cole McKisson also pitched six innings with no decision as he gave way for teammate Steffen Torgersen in the decisive seventh. McKisson gave up seven hits, struck out three and walked just one. Torgersen picked up the win in relief.
The two teams face each other in the final game of their three-game series on Friday, Apr. 17, at Mountlake Terrace High School.
In other MTHS action on Wednesday, Sammy Ruiz pitched a no-hitter as the Hawks stuffed the Stanwood Spartans 3-0 in Wesco 3A softball matchup played at Mountlake Terrace High School. Ruiz struck out 14 Spartans in the gem.
The Terrace girls tennis team saw their top three singles’ players – Nicki Bouche, Tina Liu and Allison Lorraine — all pick up individual wins, but the squad couldn’t grab that all-important fourth win. The Hawks fell 4-3 to the Shorecrest Scots.
