The Mountlake Terrace Hawks grabbed the final berth into the District 1 3A softball tournament as they defeated the Stanwood Spartans 12-7 Friday in Stanwood.
The district tournament begins on Tuesday, May 19, 4 p.m. at Phil Johnson Fields in Everett. The top three finishers in the tourney will qualify for the 3A State softball tournament later this month.
The Hawks won three games in a row during the final week of their regular season, all on the road, to earn the No. 8 seed in the district tourney.
Mountlake Terrace’s victory over the Spartans was secured with a shaky Stanwood defense that committed seven errors and a Hawk offense that pounded the ball all over Stanwood High School’s softball field. The big blow for Mountlake Terrace was a grand slam home run by freshman Jazz Zenk in the sixth inning. Zenk went 2-for-5 at the plate with a total of six RBIs and three runs scored in the game; she also was credited with the win on the mound as she came in to relieve starter Sammy Harter in the fourth inning.
The combined pitching effort of Zenk, Harter and Gabby Calhoun limited Stanwood to just two hits, but gave up enough walks and wild pitches to enable the Spartans to tally their seven runs.
Mountlake Terrace will be heading into a district tournament that features three teams with two losses or fewer so far this year; both the Everett Seagulls and the Ferndale Golden Eagles finished the regular season 19-1 while the Meadowdale Mavericks wrapped up with a mark of 18-2 this season.

In other spring sports action on Friday, the Hawk girls track team learned that Glacier Peak’s late season success is no fluke as the Grizzlies topped the field at the Wesco 3A South meet held this week at Edmonds Stadium. Mountlake Terrace had to settle for second place in the girls team standings.
Junior Chinne Okoronkwo paced the Hawks with two first place finishes, winning the triple jump with a mark of 37-09.50 and the pole vault with a leap of 12-07.00, her best effort in her high school career. Okoronkwo also placed second in the long jump — just a half-inch behind the winner Wurrie Njadoe of Shorecrest — and third in the 100 meters.
Other strong finishes by the Mountlake Terrace girls included Hallie Malins winning the shot put and placing third in the discus, Alisha Clingan earning second in the javelin, McKenna Hunt grabbing second in the 100 hurdles — just .02 seconds behind the winning time of 15.59 — and fourth in the 300 hurdles, and the team of Taylor McCullough, Julia Hart, Sophia Parsons and Isabel Kembel who won the 4 by 100 relay in a time of 50.83 and finished second in the 4 by 200 relay with a new school record time of 1:46.17.
The Hawks boys track squad struggled at the Wesco meet placing seventh in the seven-team field. Top finishers included Michael Liddell, second in the long jump; Cole Krause, third in the triple jump; Gene Au and Alex Latham, third and fourth respectively in the pole vault; Jeremiah Leben, fourth in the shot put; and Alex Woodward, fourth in the high jump.
