Prep soccer: Hawks fall to Golden Eagles 2-0 in district playoff game

MTHSHawks-logo-200x2002Perhaps it was the long drive to Bellingham, or playing on an unfamiliar pitch at Civic Stadium, but Mountlake Terrace came out flat and was soundly defeated by Ferndale 2-0 in a 3A District 1 girls soccer game on Saturday.

The No. 5-seeded Hawks now must face No. 8-seeded Meadowdale in a loser-out match at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 4 at Edmonds Stadium.

Terrace was outshot by the Golden Eagles Saturday 12-3 in a physical match that included 25 fouls committed between the two teams.

Both Ferndale goals were scored by senior Jordin Bartel, the first in the 51st minute off a header from two yards out, and the second on a one-on-one opportunity against Terrace goalkeeper Alexis McRae in the 68th minute.

McRae did her best to keep the Hawks in the match, recording eight saves against Ferndale’s relentless offensive attack.

Terrace entered the district tourney following two-straight regular season victories and will need to return to that form to continue their postseason aspirations. The Hawks face a Meadowdale squad they defeated 4-1 on Sept. 23 but the Mavericks have improved as the season progressed. Meadowdale was undefeated in their final four matches of the regular season, picking up a draw with Lynnwood and victories over Everett, Glacier Peak and Stanwood.

Meadowdale dropped their first round district match to No. 1-seeded Edmonds-Woodway 3-0 on Saturday to fall to the losers’ bracket of the tourney.
