Prep golfers from the Edmonds School District found the going tough Tuesday in the first round of the WIAA State Golf Championships in Spokane, as only one local competitor qualified for second round play.
Meadowdale’s Morgan Rood posted a first round score of 91 Tuesday in the 3A State Girls Championships taking place at Indian Canyon Golf Course and made the cut to play the second and final round of the two-day tournament.
Rood’s Meadowdale teammate Hannah Peterson and two Edmonds-Woodway Warriors — Katheryn Schalk and Francis Monahan — failed to make first round cut score of 95. Schalk shot a 98 while Peterson and Monahan each finished with a 103.
At the 3A State Boys Championships being played at Qualchan Golf Course, Mountlake Terrace’s Mike Jenson shot an 82 while Lynnwood’s Rui Nakagawa and Edmonds-Woodway’s Colin Strobeck each posted scores of 86. The first round cut was set at 80 after Tuesday’s competition.
Sam Warkentin of Bainbridge leads the boys’ field after Tuesday’s play with a first round score of 69; Abby Euyang of Lakeside and Therese Warner of Southridge share the lead in the girls’ tourney after the first round after posting scores of 76.
