The Mountlake Terrace Hawks girls tennis team, including their usually-strong no. 1 singles player Tina Liu, was defeated by the Shorewood T-Birds on Tuesday 7-0 in a Wesco League match played at Shorewood High School.
The Hawks fell to 0-2 in Wesco League South Conference play, 0-6 overall. Shorewood kept hold of first place in the division at 3-0, 4-1 overall; the T-Birds only loss so far this season has been to 4A powerhouse Jackson.
Liu, whose only regular season singles defeat over the past three seasons was in the opener this year against Marysville-Getchell’s Marina Ciferri, found out first hand Tuesday how good T-Bird freshman Sasha Gaeth is on the court. Gaeth, undefeated in her first four matches of her prep career, proved she should be considered one of the top players in the Wesco League this year as she earned her fifth victory with 6-1 and 6-2 against Liu.
“I’ve had her on my radar since she was in the fifth grade,” said Shorewood girls tennis Coach Arnie Moreno of Gaeth. “I’m really glad she is with us.”
Liu and her Hawk teammates will have to shake off Tuesday’s defeat quickly as the squad will travel to Glacier Peak on Wednesday for a date with the Grizzlies. First serves are scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
In other Terrace sports action on Tuesday, the Hawk boys soccer team scratched and clawed their way to a 3-2 victory over the Stanwood Spartans at Bob Larson Stadium in Stanwood. Terrace’s winning goal came with less than eight minutes to go in the game.
The Hawk softball team pounded the Shorecrest Scots 14-0 in a game shortened to five innings. Sammy Ruiz went 3-for-4 with a home run and a double, Jazz Zenk went 3-for-4 with a grand slam home run and Julia Brocksmith added a triple and a double for the Hawks. Kira Doan gave up just one hit and struck out 11 Scots to earn the victory.
In the opener of a three-game series, the Mountlake Terrace baseball team fell to the Glacier Peak Grizzlies 10-0 in five innings. Luke Smith took the loss on the mound for the Hawks, who drop to 0-5 in Wesco League South Conference play, 1-6 overall. Game two of the series is Wednesday, March 30, at Glacier Peak High School.

Luke Smith wasn’t the losing pitcher in the baseball game – he took the mound when the score was already 10-0, and retired the only hitter he faced.
The Herald also had Luke as the losing pitcher – beware if you’re getting any baseball or softball info from them, as their coverage has taken a downturn this spring.
