In a night of finales, the Meadowdale Lady Mavs certainly saved their best for last.
The Mavs finished their 2015-2016 season on a high note, crushing the Mountlake Terrace Hawks 69-30 Friday night at Mountlake Terrace High School.
The victory was only the fifth for Meadowdale this year (5-15 overall, 2-10 in Wesco League South Conference play), but gave the squad’s two seniors — Kassidi Dotter and Ngozi Ezeokeke — a chance to smile as they closed out their prep high school careers.
The night also marked the final home game for the Hawks’ lone senior, Claire Zucker, who was honored by the team prior to the start of the clash.
Dotter scored 16 points to lead her squad to victory, an outcome the senior had anticipated. “I had high hopes coming into this game,” she said. “(In the end) it showed our strengths and what Meadowdale has to offer. And that we’re a team everyone should look out for.”
Ezeokeke believed it was a total team effort that paid off for the Mavericks Friday night. “It feels really good because we all came together as a team and we all played hard,” she said. “It was a really good way to end the season.”
Meadowdale’s effort was apparent on both ends of the court. The defense shutout Terrace in the first quarter — the Hawks went 0-for-12 from the field during the first eight minutes – and the Mav offense got stronger as the game progressed, scoring 46 points in the second half. Meadowdale’s game total of 69 points was their high for the season.
For Zucker, her final game on the Hawks’ home court was bittersweet as the senior was recognized by her teammates with pre-game banners and gifts, but her playing time was cut short as she fouled out with 4:22 to go in the game.
Despite just a 2-17 overall record with one game remaining this year, Zucker pointed to both her teammates and first-year Head Coach Jesica Anissipour when asked if she has any positive memories from this season.
“The bond that I made with these girls is amazing, especially (considering) I have one of my best friends on the team,” Zucker said. “And this new coach, she’s brought so many blessings into my life. I just thank God every day for my team and my family.”
The Hawks will try to close out their season with a win in their finale on Tuesday, Feb. 8, when they travel to Shorewood to take on the T-Birds.
