After a disappointing loss to Meadowdale last week, the Lynnwood Royals wanted to prove that they are still a contender for postseason play this year.

The Royals did so convincingly Friday night as they racked up 455 yards in total offense on their way to a 49-28 drubbing of Mountlake Terrace at Edmonds Stadium.

Lynnwood scored touchdowns on each of their first three offense possessions against the Hawks and added another seven points their first time on defense when Jared Anderson returned an interception 55-yards for a TD.

Royals coach Keauntea Bankhead liked what he saw in his squad, not just Friday night but also in the days leading up to the contest. “This whole week we’ve been executing and finishing plays, and I think we did good at that tonight,” he said.

“I’m just proud of these guys,” Bankhead added. “They played hard and they finished.”

Junior quarterback Alton Hammond shined for Lynnwood, rushing for 255 yards and two touchdowns, and throwing TD passes of 17 and 48-yards to teammate Ryley Johnson.

“Alton Hammond – those type of guys come around every so often,” Bankhead said of his quarterback. “You don’t come with those type of players every season. He’s definitely been one of our best. He’s been a big help to this program. We look to him when we need those big plays. Today he executed and he led this team to victory.”

Senior Bradly Peth added 107 yards of rushing and two touchdowns for the Royals in the win.

The 49 points scored by Lynnwood represented the most given up by a battered Mountlake Terrace defense this season. Injuries have taken a toll on the Hawks; 315-pound lineman Javante Sims didn’t play due to a foot injury suffered two weeks ago, Mikey Jenson, who started this season playing both quarterback and linebacker, only plays on the offensive side of the ball due to nagging pains in his hips and legs.

The Hawks were also without linebacker Jordan Bishop during the first quarter on Friday due to a coach’s decision to sit the senior for undisclosed reasons.

“We’re probably down to about half of our starters we started the season with,” Hawks coach Kelly Dougan said. “So we’ve got a lot of young guys playing and they’re not up to it — not yet.”

“We missed too many tackles. That’s why we gave up 49 points; because we’re not tackling people,” he added.

Jenson tried to keep Mountlake Terrace in the game from his quarterback position, passing for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Nine of the Hawks 16 pass pass completions went to Riley Morrin, who had 217 yards and two touchdowns receptions in the loss.

With the victory, the Royals moved to 2-3 in the Wesco 3A South, 3-4 overall with an opportunity to reach .500 when they face the winless Shorewood T-Birds on Friday, Oct. 23. In addition, Lynnwood still has a shot at landing a district playoff spot, something the school hasn’t done in many years.

“We keep playing like this and we definitely should be in there somewhere,” Bankhead said of his team’s postseason possibility. “Losing last week sort of hurt us a little bit — we needed that game and the rest of these games remaining. But I think we’re in good shape. I’m not sure how it’s all going to play out, but hopefully in our favor.”

The 3-3 (4-3 overall) Hawks have finished their Wesco League 3A South schedule and will take on the Kingston Buccaneers in a non-league matchup next Friday. Mountlake Terrace hasn’t been eliminated from playoff contention, but with Friday’s loss the team doesn’t control their own destiny — they will need help from other teams to grab a post-season bid.

After Friday’s loss, Dougan wasn’t thinking about anything beyond next week’s clash with Kingston. “It’s our homecoming, so we want to put out a good product on the field,” Dougan said. “We’re working toward a winning record, and that’s important — to get us to 5 (wins) and 3 (losses).”
