The Mountlake Terrace girls cross country team lived up to their hype and easily outdistanced their competition in the opening meet of the 2014 season.
The Hawks place five runners in the top seven finishers of the Mariner Invite on Wednesday, giving the team a meet victory with a low score of 25. Jackson placed second with 52 points, Shorewood grabbed third with 65 points and host Mariner rounded out the field with 87 points.
The Hawk boys picked up a third place at the invitational meet with 60 points; the Jackson Timberwolves won the boys team competition with 25 points.
Sophomores Katherine Gustafson and Sophia Nelson led the Hawk girls team with finishes of third and fourth respectively; teammates Jessica Ong, Katherine Walter and Ella Schroth crossed the finish line close behind for fifth, sixth and seventh places.
For the boys, the top Hawk finishers were Daniel Medhane and Nick Leidig, ninth and 10th respectively.
Terrace next heads to Landley on Saturday, Sept. 20, for the South Whidbey Invitational, a meet expected to draw 38 teams from Western Washington.
