Prep cross country: Hawks leave their mark in Oregon

MTHSHawks logoThe Mountlake Terrace Hawks cross country teams took a cue from the strong winds that were blowing through the Salem area on Saturday. Like those winds, Terrace left their mark on the 2016 George Fox Wes Cook Cross Country Classic run at Willamette Mission State Park in Brooks, Oregon.

The Hawk boys squad blew away the 29-team field in the Boys Varsity Silver Division, capturing first place with a team score of 69 points, 53 points better than second place Washougal.

The Terrace girls grabbed third place in the Girls Varsity Silver Division that included 21 scoring teams from Oregon and southwest Washington.

Senior Braeden Sims led the Hawk boys with a time of 16:51.5 over the 5,000 meter course and a seventh place finish in the division that attracted 198 runners. Senior Nick Leidig placed 11th with a time of 17:10.5 while Terrace teammate Jaden Lofrese followed in 12th place with a time of 17:11.6, a personal-best for the sophomore.

Freshman Josh Beam also turned in a personal-best time on Saturday of 17:26.6 and finished in 21st place. Cody Nickell rounded out the Terrace scoring runners in 23rd place and a time of 17:29.1

On the girls’ side, Hawk senior Jessica Ong placed eighth with her best time of the 2016 season at 19:52.4. Sophia Nelson finished 11th in a time of 20:00.7 and Katherine Gustafson, running after sitting out the Oct. 13 Edmonds School District meet due to injury, took 23rd in a time of 20:47.1

Hawks Meagan Williams, Marika Jamtaas, Sandra Hart and Joan Park placed 40th, 42nd, 45th and 50th in the field of 173 runners on Saturday.

In addition to the strong varsity team finishes, the Terrace junior varsity teams were outstanding. The Hawk JV boys finished first among 22 scoring teams in the JV Silver Division; Kendall Yackley placed second among the 224 runners with a personal-best time of 18:00.8. The Terrace JV girls ran to a third place team finish in their JV Silver Division; Kari Tran, Lindee Cutler and Mazie Castagnetta were 11th, 12th and 13rd in the 105-runner field.
