It was Senior Night for the Mountlake Terrace Hawks Monday, but it was Meadowdale Maverick junior Conner Moss that crashed the party and put a damper on the Hawk baseball festivities.
Moss pitched a complete game shutout and led the Mavs to a 2-0 victory over Terrace in a Wesco League South Conference match-up played at Mountlake Terrace High School.
Moss recorded four strikeouts while walking just one to earn the win.
“What a great job Conner did today,” Meadowdale Coach Bill Hummel said. “He was effective with three pitches around the plate. I’m really, really proud of his effort today; it was just exactly what we needed.”
Moss was helped out by solid defense displayed by the Meadowdale infield, something Hummel was pleased to see. “We’ve got some young kids in our defense – we’ve got a couple sophomores on the left side and a good senior at second base and a junior at first base – and they made plays today,” Hummel said.

On the offensive side, single runs in the second and fifth innings were all the Mavs needed to put away the Hawks. Meadowdale’s Haelin Roberts knocked in the first run with an RBI triple that landed on the right field foul line and scored teammate Max Johnson. Then in the fifth inning, the Mavs’ Will Schafer scored from third base off a throwing error by the Hawks’ Drew Serres.
For Terrace, the 2-0 loss was another in a season full of close defeats. Of their 12 defeats, nine have been by two runs or less or in games decided in the final inning.
“We’ve been in all the games,” noted Terrace Coach Andrew Watters. “I’m proud of my guys; we’ve fought really hard this year and we fought hard again today.”
Before the game, Terrace honored the seven seniors on this season’s club, giving Watters a chance to be reflective about the group.
“I had a fun year coaching them this year,” Watters said. “I wish we would have done a little better for them because they would have been great group to have an opportunity as seniors to go to the playoffs. But they’re a group that has had a great career and they’ve been successful as a group. It will be sad to see them go but they’ve kind of led the way for what will happen next.”
The Mavs and the Hawks will match up for the two squad’s final game of the season on Tuesday, May 3, at Meadowdale High School. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
In other Terrace action from Monday, the Hawk girls tennis team was defeated by Shorecrest 6-1 at Mountlake Terrace High School. Terrace will close out their 2016 regular season on Tuesday when they host Shorewood; first serves are set for 3:30 p.m.
