Here’s an update from the City of Mountlake Terrace on the possible closure of the Mountlake Terrace Post Office:
We continue our dialogue with the US Postal Service regarding the status of the Mountlake Terrace Post Office. In addition, we have been receiving assistance from Congressman Jay Inslee‘s Office. We received an update this week from the US Postal Service that they currently are working to negotiate a new lease with their landlord to remain at their current location. The US Postal Service is also dealing with its own financial challenges, meaning they may be closing post offices nationwide (upwards of 3,200 out of 34,000 nationwide). However, a decision has not yet been made whether to close the existing Mountlake Terrace Post Office. If this community asset is forced to close, they will be holding a public forum to obtain feedback and input from the community.
We communicated that the City of Mountlake Terrace and the community it represents strongly opposes closing the Mountlake Terrace Post Office. This facility and the services provided are highly valued by our residents. Mountlake Terrace citizens have consistently communicated over the years that they value the extraordinary service they receive from this location. In addition, we understand that this office not only serves Mountlake Terrace, but attracts customers from many of our surrounding communities due to its strong service levels, convenience, and personal relationships. We reiterated our commitment to helping the Post Office remain in our community to include:
Letters of support from City Council;
City is willing to host a community meeting to obtain feedback and comments from public about location of post office and closure issues; and
City is willing to facilitate an introduction with other property owners, particularly the owner of Cedar Way Plaza who is willing to discuss ideas and options to relocate the Post Office to that location.
The City is confident a solution can be identified that finds balance between the financial challenges the US Postal Services is facing and keeping the Mountlake Terrace Post Office open in our community. While no timeline or dates have been identified, we have agreed to help them in any way we can.
