Mountlake Terrace Elementary School is set to have a new portable classroom installed in time for the 2014-2015 school year, following approval by the City of Mountlake Terrace last week.
The city’s Hearing Examiner recently approved a Conditional Use Permit that allows Mountlake Terrace Elementary School to add a portable classroom to its campus at 22001-52nd Ave. W. The city permit was required as schools are a conditional us within single-family residential zoned districts.
The additional space will allow Mountlake Terrace Elementary to add a new kindergarten or first-grade class next year and reduce class size in the lowest grade classes, explained school Principal Doug Johnson. “In addition to our school having free full-day kindergarten for all of our students and our on-site Pre-K program, our support for early learning just grows and grows,” he added.
Johnson stressed that the school will not see an increase in total student population despite the additional classroom space.
Although specific details of the portable classroom’s size and purpose are yet to be determined, Johnson speculates it will be installed this coming summer near Friendship Rock, a large boulder on the west side of the school campus.
