Update: New four-way stop signs coming to 220th St. SW and 58th Ave. W. next week

In addition to new four-way stop signs at the intersection of 220th St. SW. and 58th Ave. W., traffic revision ahead signs will warn motorists about the changes.

The intersection of 220th St. SW and 58th Ave. W. is scheduled to be converted from a two-way stop to an all-way stop the week of July 27, the City of Mountlake Terrace said in a press release.

This change is being made in response to expected traffic increases resulting from the Brighton School Project located at 21705 58th Avenue W. Brighton School is a private preschool through eighth grade school relocating from Lynnwood to Mountlake Terrace. They have remodeled the existing building and added an expansion to accommodate an estimated 400 students.

The City said that traffic studies show that increased traffic during peak school travel times will cause the intersection to fall below acceptable standards in the city’s adopted Transportation Master Plan. Therefore, traffic control is needed to address intersection delays.

Four “STOP” signs with flashing red lights will be added to the intersection. Stop bars will be added on 220th St. SW.

Four “Traffic Revision Ahead” signs will be added ahead of the intersection. The Traffic Revision Ahead signs have orange flags attached to them and will stay up for three to six months.

When the signage project is completed, the Police Department will be monitoring the intersection more closely for compliance.

Notification about this important traffic revision is being sent to major employers in the area, as well as, Fire District 1 and Community Transit. Post cards have been mailed to people living along 220th between 52nd and 58th Avenues.

The four-way stop is a temporary measure until a long-term solution such as a traffic signal or roundabout is funded. These solutions also take more time to implement, the City said.

  1. This is hilarious! It’s gonna be so fun to watch the traffic become so heavy gnarled up because of this that it spills over into the other two traffic lights that are just mere feet away from this intersection. I have been a long time tesudeng of MLT and the city planning blunders just keep coming. Who ever came up with this, bravo. A comedy of follies is always worth a good watch.
