Mountlake Terrace senior swimmer Riley Morgan set a school record and qualified for the WIAA state swim meet in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:01.3 Thursday at the Lynnwood Pool. Morgan’s time was almost a full second under what was needed to qualifying for state in the event.

Morgan’s record-setting, state-qualifying swim came during the Mountlake Terrace-Meadowdale dual meet won by the Mavericks 119-49.

Morgan had hoped to return to the state meet after qualifying last year in the 100 fly as a junior. She said her goal at state is to finish higher than seventh, which is where she placed in the event last year.

Morgan has also qualified for state in the 100-meter freestyle, and MTHS girls swim coach Douglas Kenoyer has hopes for his top swimmer to make the state field in the 50-meter freestyle event too.

As for the team as a whole, Kenoyer is please with their effort so far this year. “Our scores are higher than I anticipated they would be at this point of the season,” he said. “We are achieving our goals.”

Morgan and the rest of the Hawks have just six more opportunities in the pool to qualify for state or set personal bests this season, starting with two home meets next week. The team faces Shorecrest on Tuesday, Oct. 2, and the two Marysville schools on Thursday, Oct. 4. Home meets are at the Lynnwood Pool starting at 2:45 p.m.

The Girls State Swimming and Diving Championships are scheduled for Nov. 9-10 at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
