Irvin Zhang and Catherine Allemann are Mountlake Terrace High School’s Students of the Month for February.
Student Name: Irvin Zhang
Mother’s Name: Hong Pan
Father’s Name: Tao Zhang
GPA: 3.90
Clubs & Activities: Captain for Teens Against Tobacco Use, Yearbook contributor, sports editor and staff writer for The Hawkeye, member of MTHS Key Club
ASB: I joined ASB my junior year as part of the junior class ASB. I lost the election for Vice President but was able to serve my tenure as a representative for the rest of that year. After that, I made the jump and I won election to be a part of Executive ASB as the Public Relations Officer.
Athletics: I have never partaken in any form of high school athletics affiliated with MTHS. I have, however, played two years in recreational basketball at the Alderwood Boys and Girls Club. I still play but it’s all for recreation and fun.
Awards: During my junior year, I joined The Hawkeye. From then on, my writing has led me to garnering a ton of attention to my journalistic writing, specifically in the field of sports. The first award that I was given was a minor one – I was given the title of Staff Member of the Month for The Hawkeye in the month of November. Later that year, I traveled to Denver for the National High School Journalism Conference to partake in the national write off and gain some knowledge from professional journalists. It was here that I was able to get an “Excellent” award in the National Scholastic Press Association National Write Off in the category of sports writing. In February, I wrote a story about MTHS’s very own Peter White and his kickboxing story. The fall of my senior year, that story had garnered national attention and I was awarded with an Honorable Mention (top 10) for Sports Feature Story of the Year in all of the United States.
Community Service: My biggest weakness in my high school resume is the amount of community service I’ve done. With all extracurricular activities, I haven’t had the time to really pursue community service around Mountlake Terrace.
Current Employment: I am currently a Brand Ambassador for a company that started in Seattle called Biking Billboards. I have been employed for about a year and a half. Although it’s very inconsistent, I am making $20 an hour. It also comes with very flexible scheduling.
Future Educational Goals: I hope to get accepted into New York University or the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. If not those two, I will be enrolling in the Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts as part of the New School in New York. With all three, I would be majoring in journalism and minoring in political science.
Future Career Goals: I have always been passionate about sports. Through The Hawkeye, I combined my love of sports with my love of journalistic writing and I hope that someday I can become the next Stuart Scott of the world. I want to further change the world of journalism for the better like Scott did and become a sports journalist that will be part of a big entity like FOX Sports or ESPN.
