Students from the Mountlake Terrace High School journalism program returned from the recent 2014 Spring Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association National High School Journalism Convention with numerous awards in hand.
Announced earlier in the year, the delegates accepted the First Amendment Press Freedom award, given to Mountlake Terrace High School for recognition and education of the First Amendment for students.
The Hawkeye, the MTHS student newspaper, placed fifth for the Best of Show award in the convention’s newspaper tabloid category, while thehawkeye.org placed fifth in publication website — small school category.
In convention write-off competitions, three MTHS students earned honors: Nick Fiorillo earned the rating of “Superior” in Editorial Writing, Alyssa Vallester earned the rating of “Honorable Mention” in News Writing, and Will Khadivi earned the rating of “Honorable Mention” in News Editing/Headline Writing.
