Mountlake Terrace High School senior Riley Morgan was named to the All-Wesco 3A South Girls Swim Team Monday for her season’s efforts in 100 meter butterfly competition.
Morgan is heading to the WIAA Girls State Swimming and Diving Championships this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9-10, at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, where she will compete for 3A state honors in the 100 meter butterfly and in the 50 meter freestyle. She finished third at the district meet in the 100 meter butterfly with a school record time of 1:00.77, topping the old record that she had also set earlier this year.
This will be a return to the state meet for Morgan, who finished seventh in the 100 meter butterfly state competition last year.
Morgan is the only member of the Hawks’ girls swim team to qualify for the state championships following a district meet last weekend that saw the Mountlake Terrace team compete hard but just come up short in a number of events.
“Districts went well; we had some good swims,” said Coach Doug Kenoyer, who spoke highly of the effort put out by his squad.
Junior Megan Bruce just missed out on qualifying for the state meet in the 200 meter individual medley despite swimming while sick. “Megan swam really well on Friday, but came down with the stomach flu on Saturday,” Kenoyer explained. “I believe she would have made state in the 200 IM if she had felt better.”
Bruce was also part of the Hawk 200 meter freestyle relay team that just missed out on competing in the District finals Saturday by .28 seconds, “and that was with Megan feeling horribly,” Kenoyer added.
In the final team tally, Mountlake Terrace finished ninth out of 11 teams at the district meet with a score of 106 points. The Shorewood T-Birds were the district champions with 517 points, Oak Harbor finishing second with 443 points and Meadowdale placing third with 291.4 points.
The 3A preliminary competition at the State Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way begins at 2:30 p.m. Friday, with the finals scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $9 per day or $15 for both days for adults, $7 per day or $10 for both days for students with valid ASB card, children 5-11 and seniors 62 and older. The Weyerhaeuser Kind County Aquatic Center is located at 650 S.W. Campus Drive in Federal Way.
