The student clubs of Mountlake Terrace High School not only give students the opportunities to exercise teamwork, leadership, goal-setting, and problem-solving skills, but they contribute to the community in many ways. One particular MTHS club that made an impact during the 2013-2014 school year was the Key Club.

Mountlake Terrace Key Club Advisor Kimberly Nelson compiled an amazing list of accomplishments the club achieved this year:

…delivered 16 tied blankets to give away to children at a local hospital
…collected $206 for UNICEF
…collected 5,700 cans/containers of food for a local food bank
…provided gifts, food, and treats for five families for Christmas
…wrote 18 support letters to troops in Afghanistan
…collected, cleaned and repaired 267 pairs of glasses for Mercy Ships, for their SOS program
…supported the Oso landslide victims
…created 130 Valentines for MTHS staff members
…collected, sorted and delivered 23 cases of toiletries for Pathways for Women, a YWCA-operated shelter, and a local teen shelter
…waited tables and called bingo at the Lynnwood Kiwanis Club annual fundraiser.

The MTHS Key Club’s 2013-14 student leaders were Barbara Biney, Will Khadivi, Alea Nelson, Stephanie Garcia, Wyatt Allemann and Jack Pearce. Next year’s leaders will be Jessi Triemistra, Stephanie Garcia, Maria Quinones, Aarthi Yogendran, Judi Tran and Eve Largent.

A special thank you goes out to Larry Merwin, club mentor and a Lynnwood Kiwanis Club member, Nelson said. “He’s always there to assist, he attends all of our meeting, he entertains us and is so supportive of our work,” she added.

  1. Thank you so much for picking up this story. These kids inspire me every day! Kimberly Nelson
