MTHS Hawkeye staff wins several awards at convention in Los Angeles

Staff members for Mountlake Terrace High School’s student-run publication The Hawkeye took home several awards from the Journalism Education Association and National Scholastic Press Association (JEA/NSPA) national convention from April 15-17 in Los Angeles.

In addition to the First Amendment Press Freedom Award, which the publication has won for three years in a row, The Hawkeye took eighth place in the NSPA’s Best of Show contest for its special edition focusing on the 2016 presidential primaries.

Eight staff members were also recognized during the JEA’s on-site write-off competitions during the convention. More than 1,230 students participated.

Here is a full list of the winning staff members provided by The Hawkeye:

  • News Writing — freshman Matthew Hipolito earned an Honorable Mention
  • Editorial Writing — freshman Marianne Nacanaynay earned an Honorable Mention
  • Literary Magazine Illustration — junior Isaac Otis earned an Honorable Mention
  • Newsmagazine Layout — junior Kira Doan earned an Honorable Mention
  • Review Writing — junior Ian Moffet earned an Honorable Mention
  • Social Media Reporting — junior Stephi Smith and sophomore Vivian Knowka-Keane earned Honorable Mentions
  • Broadcast News Writing — junior Sky Schank earned an Excellent (Schank is the producer of HBN and a member of The Hawkeye staff.)
