MTHS Hawkeye staff members earn contest awards at Boston conference

HawkeyeWebLogoHawkTAO4Six Mountlake Terrace High School students who work for the school’s Hawkeye newspaper earned awards at the Journalism Education Association Write-Off contest in Boston on Nov. 17, 2013.

The contest involved creating journalistic pieces on a tight deadline in a convention setting. For example, in the News Writing category, contestants listened to a short presentation and then wrote a piece of no more than 350 words detailing what was discussed. For Literary Magazine: Illustration, contestants were given a literary piece for inspiration and two hours to create a sketch, as it should appear in its final form, ready for print.

The awards have three possible ranks. Superior is the highest honor, with Excellent following and Honorable Mention after that.

Erika Fisher was recognized with the only Superior award, in the Literary Magazine: Illustration category.

Nick Fiorillo, Arsha Kiani and Maria Balcita all earned Excellent awards in Online News Package.

Honorable Mentions were given to Paxtyn Merten for News Writing and Joy Gardner for Advertising.

During their trip to the East Coast for the conference, Hawkeye staff members also had an opportunity to sit in on a Page 1 Meeting at the New York Times.

Below, you can see the paper’s live tweets of their awards. Congratulations, Hawkeye staff!

  1. Great experience for these students. They were thrilled about her experience at the New York Times. Erika Fisher – I so jealous.
