The Hawkeye, the Mountlake Terrace High School journalism department’s print and online publication, earned its first-ever Pacemaker Award last weekend.
The National Scholastic Press Association announced the winners of its highest national award during its spring High School Journalism Convention last weekend in San Francisco. The Online Pacemaker Award is presented to the top online student publications based upon design, navigation, writing/editing, graphics and interactivity. The Hawkeye was one of just nine online publications from schools with enrollment of less than 1,500 to earn the award, and the only publication from a Pacific Northwest school of any size to be honored.
Vince DeMeiro, faculty advisor for The Hawkeye, tweeted, “Couldn’t be more proud of a group of students,” following the announcement of the award. MTHS junior Erick Yanzon is the webmaster for the online Hawkeye, with senior Michelle Schomer serving as the editor-in-chief.
The Hawkeye also received a sixth place “Best of Show” Award at the San Francisco convention in the category of Publication Website Small School.
