While it was official called the Wesco 3A Track and Field Championships, it might as well been called the Hawk Showcase as the Mountlake Terrace High School girls team dominated their 3A rivals, leading wire-to-wire in the team competition. The championship meet, held over two days at Quil Ceda Stadium in Marysville, also saw five Hawks win individual titles in nine events.
Leading the Terrace girls squad was Chinne Okoronkwo, who placed first in the pole vault, the long jump and the triple jump. Okoronkwo’s winning marks of 18-9.75 in the long jump and 40-6.25 in the triple jump are the best by any female high schooler in the state so far this season in those two events.
Also winning two events were Hawks Barbara Biney, who captured both the 100 meters and the 200 meters, and Katherine Gustafson, winner of the 1600 meters and the 3200 meters. Other Hawk individual event victors were McKenna Hunt in the 100 meter hurdles, Hailee Malins in the discus.
The MTHS track teams travel to Shoreline Stadium for the two-day 3A District 1 meet on Wednesday, May 21 and Friday, May 23. Competitors there will be fighting for berths to the WIAA state meet slated for May 29-31 in Tacoma.
