At one point this season, Mountlake Terrace’s Chinne Okoronkwo had the top mark in the pole vault event among all girl high schoolers in Washington State. Her vault of 11-6 has since been eclipsed by a couple of state competitors, but Okoronkwo now has a new high mark other track athletes can set their sights on, this time in the triple jump.

Okoronkwo’s triple jump of 39-6 not only won her the event at last Saturday’s Terrace Invite, but it is now the best mark so far this season in the state.

Okoronkwo’s victory in the triple jump wasn’t her only one on Saturday as the Hawk freshman also took home the pole vault event with a mark of 11 feet. The only other podium finish by a Terrace girl Saturday was freshman Katherine Walter, who placed third in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:39.83, her best effort in the event of the year.

The Terrace girls finished as a team in sixth place among the 12-school on Saturday.

On the boys’ side, the Hawks placed second behind strong finishes by a number of their athletes. Senior Duane Dahl won twice, outsprinting the field in the 100 meters with a time of 10.8 and beating the competition in the 400 meters with a time of 51.36. Both times represented his best of the season.

Hawk senior Gifton Okoronkwo took the boys’ triple jump with a leap of 44’ 9.5”. Junior Jack Pierce placed first in the 3200 meters with a time of 9:50.51, his best time of the year and the only competitor to finish under 10 minutes on Saturday.

Other Terrace notables on the boys side were Joshua Kim finishing second in the 200 meters with a time of 23.68; Beau Kennedy placing second in the javelin with a toss of 155-11; Brett Potter grabbing third in the discus with a mark of 125-11; Yohans Tewolde finishing third in the 3200 meters with a time of 10:06.72; and Pierce with a second podium finish, a third place, in the 1600 meters.

The upcoming week is a busy one for MTHS track; both the boys and girls will match up with Glacier Peak and Meadowdale at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday, April 25, in Snohomish, starting at 3:30 p.m. The Hawks then travel to Marysville on Saturday, April 27, for the Tomahawk Classic at Marysville Pilchuck High School starting at 11 a.m.
