After building a big halftime lead, fatigue caught up with the Mountlake Terrace girls basketball team as they lost to Enumclaw 52-45 Friday at the King’s Christmas Tournament in Shoreline.
“We ended up on the short end, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort,” said head coach David Brophy. “With just seven girls we just got too tired.”
Implementing a new zone press for just the second game of the year, the Hawks rattled the Hornets into numerous turnovers and missed shots early, resulting in a 14-2 Terrace lead just five minutes in. But as much as the Hawks benefited from their pressing efforts, it also took a lot out of them as they limped their way through the final stages of the matchup.
“We did some good things tonight. But about half way through the fourth quarter we didn’t have any more gas in the tank,” Brophy said. “There were some crucial moments we didn’t make the best decisions, but then again that might be attributed to being tired.”
The Hawks led for most of the game before Enumclaw (6-4) took a 44-43 advantage with 2:45 left, a lead the Hornets would not give up.
Sophomore Samantha Romanowski again led the Hawks in scoring with 19 points despite noticeably favoring one leg late in the game. She banged her knee in practice earlier in the season and has been bothered by it since, even missing a couple games. Maddie Kristjanson scored 14 for Terrace while Nikkie Froehlich added eight before fouling out of the game with 2:06 to go.
The Hawks (2-8) play for third place in the eight-team tournament on Saturday at 4p.m. against Kingston. The championship game follows at 6 p.m., a match-up between Enumclaw and Newport. Both games take place at the Mike Martin Gymnasium of King’s High School, 300 N. 190th St.
