The Mountlake Terrace High School girls cross country team showed they are a squad to contend with this season as they grabbed ninth place in the 27-team field at the Twilight Invite held Saturday in Marysville.
Four Hawks placed in the top 50 in the event, led by the 16th place finish of freshman Katherine Gustafson, who ran the 5000 meter course at Cedarcrest Golf Course in a time of 19:38. Freshman Sophia Nelson finished in 21st overall with a time of 19:34, sophomore Katherine Walters ended up 46th at 20:11, and sophomore Ella Schroth placed 50th at 20:20.
Defending state champions Glacier Peak won the girls team competition as all five scorers on the squad placed in the top 35.
The Terrace boys had a strong showing at the event also, finishing 13th in the field of 36 teams. Senior Jack Pearce was the squad’s top finisher, grabbing 25th with a time of 16:31. Fellow seniors Peter Kidane, Wyatt Allemann, Nathan Sparks and Chris Baumgartner rounded out the top five Hawk runners on Saturday.
The invitational meet displayed just how tough Terrace’s rivals are in the Wesco 3A South conference. While Glacier Peak won the girls competition on Saturday, on the boys side the Grizzlies finished eighth, while the Shorewood T-Birds came home in seventh. The 4A Redmond Mustangs won the boys crown by placing two runners in the top 10 and six in the top 44.
