Mountlake Terrace High School junior Chinne Okoronkwo has been named the Gatorade Washington State High School Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

The award, in partnership with USA TODAY High School Sports, was announced on Wednesday and is a precursor to the Gatorade National High School Athletes of the Year awards that are presented next month in Los Angeles.

Okoronkwo’s state award is based upon success in sports competition, academic honors and distinctions, and exemplary character. Gatorade and USA Today awards 606 state Player of the Year awards, 12 national Player of the Year awards in seven sports and two overall national Player of the Year awards.

Okoronkwo won three individual state titles — 3A girls long jump, 3A girls triple jump and 3A girls pole vault – at the 2015 Class 3A state track and field championships last month.
