Mountlake Terrace won’t have a 3rd of July celebration this year.

Seaun Richards, president of the Cheeseburger Babies Foundation that has sponsored the event for the past four years, said that he decided to cancel the event after consulting with City of Mountlake Terrace officials.

Due to the adverse impacts of COVID-19, an inability to attract sponsorships, and the status of social distancing still uncertain for July, Richards said it makes sense to cancel it this year and start planning for next year.

“This was a very tough decision to make for the safety of the community,” Richards said. “I really would like to thank all of the past sponsors and participants and look forward to getting the event back up and running July 3, 2021.”

The annual event at Ballinger Park attracted thousands of people from South Snohomish County and typically included live music, games, contests, food and fireworks.

  1. Inslee would have to declare us in phase 4 for large gatherings to be allowed. Political pressure is likely to speed this process up but I was talking to people back in March that I felt he was looking at August-September. If you go with his announced “if everything goes right” timeline then mid July is the earliest. Organizers would need to know for sure an open date and have enough time to put something together so I view it as pretty unlikely.

  2. I am so sad it is canceled. It has become one of my favorite events for the holiday. But….I understand, to plan a definite timeline is needed. With all the uncertainty, it is a wise choice. As a healthcare worker I am proud of the success Snohomish county has done to “flatten the curve”. I know we are all getting impatient, but further commitment to working together and opening as evidence presents itself will continue to pay off. Stay strong and be kind, and I will look forward to next year.
