Family and friends of Eva Blomberg gathered Friday afternoon for a milestone birthday.

Blomberg, who lives in the Mountlake Terrace Plaza retirement community, turned 100 years old.

And what a 100 years it’s been for Blomberg.

A 58-year marriage to the love of her life – husband Paul.  Two children — son David and daughter Marcia. Eight grandchildren. Eight great-grandchildren.

A career as a bookkeeper. Travels across the United States and the world.

David, who lives in Idaho, was in town for the celebration, which extended into the weekend.

What kind of mother was Blomberg?

“She was very caring, very loving,” David said. “She was very involved with her children.”

Added Marcia, “She’s been an awesome grandmother and great grandmother.”

She also set an example that her children followed.

“She taught us both a wonderful ethic,” said Marcia, who lives in Arlington.

Blomberg and her husband lived in France for a time and traveled throughout Europe and Africa. The two later had a motorhome that they used to travel throughout the states.

Until 2009, Blomberg was living on her own in Issaquah when the family decided it would be best for her to move into an assisted living facility. They chose Mountlake Terrace Plaza because extended family live nearby.

Her longevity can be attributed to both genetics and her active lifestyle, according to David and Marcia.

One of Blomberg’s six siblings lived to be almost 100 and two others are in their 90s.

“She was very active in church,” David said. “She worked with youth and children.”

When Blomberg was in her 70s and 80s, she used to drive out and visit with older people who weren’t able to leave their homes.

“My folks always liked people,” David said. “They were visiting someone or having someone over.”

Blomberg also is a big sports fan and especially loved the Seattle Sonics.

“She was very devastated when the Sonics moved,” David said.

Blomberg loves living at Mountlake Terrace Plaza, Marcia said. “She’s very involved in the activities here.”

For Marcia, the reason why her mother reached this milestone birthday is simple.

“She has great determination,” Marcia said.
