In response to the recently-proposed legislation that could reduce funding for public education, 23-year veteran educator Vince DeMiero has launched “160 Reasons,” a grassroots effort to raise awareness and encourage action.
“There are about 160 reasons why I started this grassroots effort — those 160 reasons are the students I see in my classroom every day at Mountlake Terrace High School,” DeMiero said. “If signed into law, this proposed legislation would destroy public education as we know it,” he said.
The 160 Reasons website (www.160reasons.org) features video testimonies about the importance of public education, and what DeMiero believes are negative impacts the proposed funding cuts could have on students, teachers and our community. The website invites visitors to share their reasons for supporting public education, and provides resources and information about how to take action.
DeMiero has taught at Mountlake Terrace High School for 23 years, and is recognized as one of the nation’s finest journalism teachers. Last year, he ran for House Representative in the 1st Legislative District, and came within 200 votes of advancing to the Primary Election.
“I believe the promise of tomorrow depends on the investment we make in today’s youth,” DeMiero said. “My hope is that the 160 Reasons website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel will raise awareness and encourage activism,” he said.
“If these cuts are put into effect, the ramifications will be felt for generations,” he said.
