After four years of college baseball, Mountlake Terrace High School 2010 graduate Andrew Woeck will get his chance to play for pay as the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization drafted the Brier native in the 31st round of the 2014 Major League Draft on Saturday.
Woeck was the 937th player out of 1,215 taken in the three-day draft of amateur baseball talent.
The right-handed pitcher had 11 mound appearances for North Carolina State University in 2014 with an ERA of 2.17 in 29 innings. Woeck compiled a record of 3-1, struck out 41 and gave up only nine base-on-balls this year.
The Wolfpack finished the 2014 season with a 32-23 team record.
Woeck’s college baseball career started in 2011 at Western Nevada College where he went 15-5 over two seasons, struck out 63 as a freshman and 96 as a sophomore, and help lead the Wildcats to the Junior College World Series in 2012, where they finished fourth.
Woeck was a member of the 2010 MTHS baseball team that won a District 1 championship. Woeck fanned 104 that year for the Hawks and had a 1.14 ERA over 67 innings pitched. He was named to the All-Wesco First Team as a pitcher and a shortstop in 2010.
