Meadowdale High School’s Griffin Over received the top honor Wednesday night during the Edmonds School District’s 14th annual Scholar-Athlete recognition banquet. A total of 17 graduating scholar-athletes, along with coaches and community members, were honored during the event.

Over, who served this year as captain of the Mavericks’ basketball and soccer teams, received a $4,500 scholarship. He will graduate from Meadowdale with a 4.0 GPA, and will serve as the 2015 class valedictorian. He will attend the University of Notre Dame next year, where he will study either finance or sociology.

The 17 students chosen to be recognized — four athletes at each of the district’s comprehensive high schools plus one student athletic trainer — were not only stellar athletes in at least two sports, but also had significant academic and community service credentials. In addition, the event recognized an outstanding coach and a community contributor from each of the four high schools.

The My Neighborhood News Network of online community news sites — My Edmonds News, Lynnwood Today and MLTnews — was a coach’s award sponsor.

Stroncek also presented her own recognition — the Director’s Award — to Ken Allen, a 1974 graduate of Meadowdale High School, where he played football and graduated with honors. Allen and former District Athletic Director Teri McMahan laid the foundation for the scholar-athlete banquet in 2001, with the first event held in 2002, Stroncek noted.

Here are the athletes, coaches and community members recognized by each school’s athletic coordinator:

Edmonds-Woodway High School

Athletes

Marc Campagnaro: basketball and baseball, attending Washington State University to study business/marketing. $2,000

Kelvin Dankwa: football and basketball (athletic trainer), attending Seattle University to study sports and exercise science, $3,500

Kiera Towell: soccer and track and field, attending University of Pennsylvania to study engineering, $3,500

Hanna Rehnfeldt: volleyball and tennis, attending University of Utah to study pre-medicine, biology and child psychology, $2,500

Coach: Volleyball coach Nicole Bordeaux, who has led her team to the playoffs every year since becoming the Warriors’ head coach five years ago.

Community members: Debbie and Rich Alseth, who for the past 32 years along with four generations of their family have operated the concession stand at the Edmonds School District Stadium. The Alseths, both retired Edmonds School District teachers and administrators, are retiring at the end of the school year.

Lynnwood High School

Athletes

Desiree Graham: volleyball and softball, attending Whitworth University where she will play softball and study pre-medicine. $2,500

Andrew Katzenberger: football, basketball, and track and field. Attending Eastern Washington University as a preferred walk-on for the EWU football team. Will study mechanical engineering technology. $3,000

Tyler McArthur: cross country, basketball, track and field. Attending Brigham Young University – Idaho where he will study chemistry and plans to attend medical school. $2,000

Cristi Phan: volleyball and tennis. Attending the University of Washington where she will study biology and mathematics. $1,500

Coach: Lynnwood head football coach Keauntea Bankhead, described by LHS Athletic Director Rob McMains as “a person of integrity and just a first-class individual.” Bankhead led the Royals to four-win season in 2014, the most wins the program has seen since 1999.

Community contributors: Parents Connie Schmidt and Julee McArthur, co-treasurers for the LHS Booster Club, for their “positive influence” on the student athletes they work with.

 

Meadowdale High School

Ciarra Hart: basketball and softball, attending University of Washington to study economics. $2,000

Rory Kirkpatrick: cross country and swimming, attending Virginia Tech University to study electrical engineering. $1,500

Taylor Monroe-Jones: soccer and tennis, attending University of Washington to study bioengineering. $3,500

Coach: Mavericks boys basketball assistant coach Andrew Matty, recognized for his selfless work with his athletes, his sense of humor and his ability to (seemingly) be in several places at the same time.

Community contributor: Meadowdale parent Michelle Evans, who single-handedly oversaw the Mavs’ concession stand during all winter sports events.

Mountlake Terrace High School

Athletes

Conrad Bratz: cross country, track and field. Attending Western Washington University where he will study recreation, tourism/business. $1,500

Taron Castleton: cross country, wrestling. Attending University of Washington to study economics and political science. $3,000

Alisha Clingan: volleyball, track and field. Attending Charis Bible College where she will study nursing. $2,000

Allison Lorraine: soccer and tennis. Attending Northwest University to study business administration. $3,000

Coach: Ashley Dawson, dance and hip hop team adviser, who took the MTHS hip hop team to state for the first time in the school’s history.

Community Contributor: Mountlake Terrace Sports Booster Club President Tara Zuehl, who worked hard to ensure that all MTHS students were able to play sports, even if they couldn’t afford it.
