Music lovers got an earful Thursday night as the jazz bands of Mountlake Terrace High School were joined by professional musician Gary Smulyan for a hot concert in an even hotter MTHS Theater.

Smulyan, who is in the Northwest for some recording sessions and a series of concert appearances, played with both MTHS Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 bands for more than an hour.

With record temperatures outside, the theater was quite warm inside for performers and onlookers. But the conditions didn’t slow down the musicians who seemed to enjoy sharing the stage with Smulyan.

Thursday’s concert was just the first of a number of performances by MTHS musicians during the final few weeks of the 2014-15 school year. The Mountlake Terrace High School music department will send a number of bands and combos to the Edmonds Jazz Connection on Saturday, May 23; the following week the MTHS jazz and concert bands travel to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, for a Music in the Parks competition at Silverwood Theme Park.

On June 1, MTHS Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 will be joined by alumni members and the Brier-Terrace Middle School Band at a special concert at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley in Seattle. Additional end-fo-the-year concerts by the MTHS Orchestra, Choir and concert bands will take place June 2-4 at the high school.
