It was a busy weekend for Mountlake Terrace High School athletes as the cross country and swim teams competed in big late-season meets while a pair of Hawk tennis team members qualified for the 3A District 1 Tournament scheduled to begin on Oct. 28.
At the Wesco Cross Country Championships at Lakewood High School on Saturday and the anticipated showdown between the cross country powerhouse girls teams of Mountlake Terrace and Glacier Peak didn’t disappoint – the two squads placed eight runners among the top nine finishers in the 5,000 meter 3A South varsity girls race. With runners finishing first, fourth, seventh, eleventh and thirteenth, the Grizzlies edged out the Hawks for the team title by just six points.
Sophomore Katherine Gustafson was the top runner in the event for Terrace, finishing third overall with at time of 19:29.43. Teammate Ella Schroth placed fifth, Katherine Walter grabbed eighth, Jessica Ong finished ninth, Marika Jamtaas placed 17th and Sophia Nelson followed at 18th.
On the boys side, the Hawks finished fourth place in the 3A South team competition. At Lynnwood pool, Mountlake Terrace sophomore Annika Matthews continued to be a standout performer in an otherwise down season for the Hawk girls swim team. Matthews captured two events at the Edmonds District meet on Saturday, winning the 50- meter freestyle and the 100 backstroke. The Terrace team scored 115 points in the four-team competition; Edmonds-Woodway won the team title with 405 points.
After two days of rain delays, the Wesco 3A South Boys Tennis Tournament concluded on Oct. 24.
