More on the winning ways of the MTHS Hawkeye team

Hawkeye 2 Front row (left to right): Terrah Short, Kyra Dahlman, Michelle Schomer, AnhViet Nguyen, Conner Worman and Serafina Urrutia. Middle row: Vince DeMiero, Erick Yanzon, Joy Gardner, Peter Kidane, Nick Fiorillo, Jacinta Garcia, Maria Balcita, Huyen Le, Bob Cavanaugh, Alyssa Vallester and Mike Cane. Back row: Dominic DeMiero, Nathan Koplitz, Will Khadivi, Roxana Valea, Erika Fisher, Austin McDermott, Serena Urrutia and Robin Choi.

We reported earlier that students from the Mountlake Terrace High newspaper The Hawkeye did well at the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention at the Washington State Convention Center. The Hawkeye earned third place in the Best of Show category for papers that regularly publish 12 pages and eighth place in the News Websites category.

Individually, AnhViet Nguyen, Will Khadivi, Erick Yanzon (online news package) and Kyra Dahlman (Photoshop art) earned “honorable mentions” for their work, and Robin Choi (advertising) earned an “excellent.” They were among the more than 1,475 individual students who participated in on-site contests – one of the largest numbers competing ever.

In addition, the Hawk Broadcast Network TV Leadership Team provided technical assistance at the National High School Journalism Convention, providing a live, three-camera feed to the convention main floor giant screens for the keynote speeches.

The live feed, a first for all JEA/NSPA conventions, was something that the NSPA always wanted to do but never before had a team with the skills and equipment that was willing to make it happen. The HTV Leadership Team consists of Bradley Koplitz, Jenna Berndt, Jazmine Smith and Erin Keating.
