MLT Summer Camp Selected to Celebrate Olympic Day 2011

The City of Mountlake Terrace Recreation and Parks Summer Camp program has been selected to be a host site for Olympic Day 2011. This exciting program, the first of its kind for the city’s camps, is scheduled for Friday, July 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Evergreen Playfield, 22205 56th Ave W. The event, sanctioned by the United States Olympic Committee, will include a presentation by Olympian Kylee Berger, field day style Olympic Games for all Mountlake Terrace Recreation and Parks camp children, an Olympic Day Proclamation, as well as opening and closing ceremonies for the kids.

Olympic Day is a worldwide commemoration of Baron Pierre de Coubertin’s June 23, 1894, convening of the first International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting at the Sorbonne in Paris, and the founding of the Modern Olympic Games. National Olympic Committees (NOC’s) throughout the world will also participate in the international celebration, with each Olympic Committee sending Olympic Day greetings to participating nations.

“We are very excited to be participating in this worldwide celebration of the Olympic Movement,” said Recreation Supervisor Jeff Betz. “It is our hope and goal to encourage and inspire our camp children with this one-of-a-kind opportunity.”
