MLT Senior Center likely to operate Ballinger Clubhouse

The Mountlake Terrace Senior Center has beat out My Personal Chef, an Edmonds-based catering company, for the opportunity to manage the Ballinger Clubhouse, the city-owned building that formerly housed the Ballinger Lake Golf Course pro shop and snack bar.

The City of Mountlake Terrace began seeking a party to manage the facility last spring and received only two proposals to consider. The Mountlake Terrace Senior Center was chosen as the “preferred respondent” based upon an evaluation of level of interest, experience, approach to operations, financial strength and the ability to provide value, revenue and community benefit, said City Manager John Caulfield.

“Preliminary negations are underway to develop a lease agreement between the senior center group and the city,” Caulfield stated.

As the managing tenant for the Ballinger Clubhouse, 23000 Lakeview Drive, the senior center will be able to move many, if not all, of its current operations to the city facility, but will also have to oversee the building’s rental business and general maintenance. “This exciting move comes with challenges and opportunities, but we are up to the task,” Mountlake Terrace Senior Center Executive Director Mike Cooper said.

The clubhouse includes a large banquet/meeting room, commercial kitchen, café seating area, restrooms and outdoor deck, with additional space that most likely will be converted into office space.

Cooper is wasting no time in an effort to get help for the seniors’ group as they prepare to manage the clubhouse. “We are seeking grants to help with some renovations in the 6,800 square foot building,” he said.

Neither the City of Mountlake Terrace nor the MLT Senior Center indicated when the lease negotiations would be completed, or when the seniors’ group could move into the facility.
