The cities of Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood, Edmonds and Mill Creek are joining forces during the month of October to bring awareness to the problem of domestic violence by passing out purple light bulbs to residents and business owners.
“The reason behind the purple lights is just to bring awareness, to get people to ask questions, ‘why are there purple lights everywhere?’ so that we can start talking about domestic violence,” said Danielle Singson, Domestic Violence Coordinator for the Mountlake Terrace Police Department.
October has been proclaimed Domestic Violence Awareness Month by Mountlake Terrace Mayor Jerry Smith. Singson spoke at a recent city council meeting describing the effort the city has made to bring attention to the issue of domestic violence.
“This is the fifth year we’ve participated in this nationwide, and actually international, campaign,” Singson noted.
In addition to handing out purple light bulbs and encouraging their display during October, many of the police department cruisers in Mountlake Terrace will be sporting magnetic purple ribbons through the month.
