Local middle school and high school students are earning their way to top finishes at recent Technology Student Association (TSA) regional competitions.

Nineteen members of the Mountlake Terrace High School TSA, led by faculty advisor Mark Burbank, participated in the Western Washington Regional TSA Competition on Feb. 2 at Jackson High School in Mill Creek. Paxtyn Merten placed first in the Essays on Technology category; the team of Conner Ebright and Jonathan Theim picked up a first-place finish in Structural Engineering.

Brier-Terrace Middle School hosted the middle school Western Washington Regional TSA Competition on Jan. 12, with a number of BTMS students earning strong finishes. In total, 38 Brier-Terrace students competed in the regional event that also attracted clubs from Alderwood, College Place, Meadowdale and Finn Hill Middle Schools.

The BTMS TSA club not only produces students strong in TSA competitions (more than 100 state champions since 2005) but they also work for charitable causes. Last week the club presented the local chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society with a check for $614. The son of BTMS faculty members James and Heidi Sullivan was diagnosed with leukemia in June 2011.

Both the middle school and high school TSA State Competitions are scheduled for March 28-30 in Bellevue.
