Neighbors can work together to prepare for disaster. Prepared neighborhoods can help save lives, reduce the severity of injuries and trauma and reduce property damage in the case of a disaster.
Map Your Neighborhood teaches neighbors to rely on each other for help even before fire, medical, police or utility responders arrive. In the worst of disasters, it can be days before emergency crews can respond.
You can bring this program to your community by becoming a Neighborhood Ambassador Volunteer. Sign up for a free 90-minute workshop to learn how the program works, then organizers will work with you to host a Map Your Neighborhood meeting for your neighbors.
During the seminar, attendees will learn the first nine steps to take immediately after a disaster to protect homes and neighborhoods. Participants will also identify skills and equipment available in a neighborhood, create a neighborhood map identifying where natural gas and propane tanks are located and create a contact list identifying neighbors with specific needs, such as the elderly or children who may be home alone.
