Letter to the Editor: Mountlake Terrace well served by its state legislators

mltnewsDear Editor,

In early October we held a very successful meeting to thank our state and federal legislators for their ongoing support of the Main Street Revitalization.

Speaking on our own behalf as City Councilmembers, we have worked firsthand with Representative Luis Moscoso and Representative Derek Stanford and find them to be strong advocates and thoughtful lawmakers for the Mountlake Terrace community. It is because of their efforts, and those of Senator Rosemary McAuliffe, that the Mountlake Terrace Main Street Revitalization Project (located in the 1st District) continues to receive funding and move forward.

Rep. Luis Moscoso — a resident of Mountlake Terrace — has actively supported the city’s legislative priorities. He looks for solutions to some of the largest problems our community and state face in the transportation area — congestion on our roadways, safety issues created by an increase in rail traffic, and more. Through his role as Vice Chair on the House Transportation Committee, Rep. Moscoso has advocated for transportation projects that are key to helping relieve congestion and grow the aerospace and technology industries — two major employment sectors for the Mountlake Terrace community. Rep. Mossoro’s advocacy on transportation issues is invaluable.

Likewise, Rep. Derek Stanford is Vice Chair on the House Capital Budget Committee, and has been a strong advocate for fully funding the local Public Works Assistance Account, which grants low-interest loans to jurisdictions like Mountlake Terrace. Receiving one of these loans would help the city advance the downtown Main Street Revitalization Project. The Association of Washington Cities (AWC) recently recognized Rep. Stanford as a Municipal Champion for his work in advocating for this program. As a Council, we were pleased to join AWC in presenting the award.

We also commend Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe for her leadership and support for our Main Street Project. It is because of these elected officials that $2 million was allocated to our Main Street Project that will create jobs and diverse housing opportunities.

Rep. Moscoso, Rep. Stanford, and Senator McAuliffe stand tall as leaders in making our downtown vision a reality.

Sincerely,

Mayor Jerry Smith

Mayor Pro Tem Laura Sonmore
