Today we continue to look at the candidates that are on the August 17 primary ballot. Below are the candidates for state legislative district 21, state representative position 2.
Marko Liias
(Prefers Democratic Party)
Elected Experience:
I have been your state representative since 2008. I also served on the Mukilteo City Council for two years.
Other Professional Experience:
I owned and operated a small business for five years and learned how hard it can be to survive in a tough economy.
Education:
I graduated from Kamiak High School in Mukilteo and I worked my way through Georgetown University with the help of scholarships and student loans.
Community Service:
I serve on the board of the Youth Suicide Prevention Program, volunteer with the Kamiak High School Debate Team, and I’m a member of Ducks Unlimited and the Coastal Conservation Association.
Statement:
It has been a privilege to serve as your state representative for the last two years. Even in the midst of this tough economy, I am proud of what we have accomplished together. We have balanced the budget, invested in schools, and created nearly 100,000 jobs. Our work isn’t done, and that is why I am asking for your vote again. We must fully fund our schools, support small businesses and create jobs. If you send me back to Olympia, I will continue to work hard to find common sense solutions. I ask for your vote on Election Day.

Our area has always been a rich source of opportunity, and I don’t want that to ever change. If you elect me, I will represent us in passing legislation that helps create jobs, lowers unfair tax burdens, and eliminates the waste from our state government. My private sector career gives me the experience necessary to tackle our budget issues. Please give me a chance to fix it and vote for me.

It’s time for smaller, smarter government to bring back jobs and excellent schools. State spending has grown much faster than inflation and population, and high taxes are chasing jobs away; our state has 600,000 unemployed or underemployed! I support lowering taxes, allowing principals more control of budgets, curriculum, and staff, and following our State Auditor’s recommendations to cut costs. As a former single parent, I oppose cutting from education, public safety, and caring for the vulnerable; these are our state Constitutional priorities. I pledge to never vote for higher taxes. I’ll fight for common-sense government. I ask for your vote!

Mike Huisman
(Prefers SeniorSide Party)
Elected Experience:
President Edmonds Downtown Retailers
Other Professional Experience:
40 years of marketing and management in seven industries; contract negotiations, budgeting and production. I have owned three small businesses during the last 30 years that we have lived in the district. I am developing an information website for seniors: myseniorside.com.
Education:
Paula and I attended the University of Washington. We put three children thru the Edmonds School District.
Community Service:
I am proud of my time working with children for over 25 years. Edmonds C.C., Holy Cross, O’Dea, Mid-City football, Edmonds Boys Club, Lynnwood Girls Fast Pitch, Ed-Lynn Youth Club,Holy Rosary
Statement:
My platform is an advocacy of the senior generation. As seniors, we have a major impact on the state. A House Committee on Aging should provide protection for our seniors’ needs. Medicaid, prescription prices, insurance discrimination, fraud, property tax discounts, senior housing and jobs for seniors need to be priorities. We all have a critical interest in senior issues because you are one, know one or are going to be one! Political parties have torn us down the middle. As a moderate independent, I believe the repair can only be made from the middle, not from the extreme sides.

Thank you for posting this review of the Candidates. We need as much info as we can get due to the County Auditors lousy judgement in eliminating the voters phamphlet. I will be looking to eliminate the current Snohomish Auditor next election.
Voting pamphlet wasn’t eliminated, it’s available online here: https://www.co.snohomish.wa.us/documents/Departm…Huge taxpayer money saver to have it online only. Great idea if you ask me… I rarely looked at the pamphlet anyway, and we’d always get one for each voter in the house… a huge waste of paper and money. Digital is MUCH better! Additionally, for the general election, the pamphlet will be available BOTH online, and as a normal pamphlet mailed to each registered voter. On another note.. great job Dustin getting these up on the site… I’d like to help you dive in even deeper after the primary. Help our fellow MLT residents get the deep and skinny on how each candidate sees our community… nice work. Now, GOTV!!!
Hey, you gonna update to the final two now the primary has been certified? Or are you waiting for the voters’ guide to come out?
