The Mountlake Terrace girls basketball team, sitting in last place in the Wesco 3A South conference, took the highly touted Stanwood Spartans into overtime Friday night at Mountlake Terrace High School but just couldn’t complete what would have been the biggest upset in Wesco basketball this season. The Hawks were outscored in the OT 10-5 and ending up going down to the first-place Spartans 58-53.
The game was a battle between two sophomores, as Hawk Samantha Romanowski led Terrace in scoring with 18 points. But Mountlake Terrace had no answer for Stanwood’s Triston Murphy. The Spartan sophomore, who averages less than 10 points per game, scored 23 on Friday to lead her team in the victory.
The loss dropped the Hawks record to 1-6 in Wesco play, 4-10 overall. Stanwood remains undefeated in Wesco action at 7-0, 11-2 overall.
Mountlake Terrace will have to find a way to bounce back after the emotional defeat as their next three games are away from the Terracium, starting with a Wednesday, Jan. 16 match-up at Everett. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
