Kamiak holds off Mountlake Terrace for 2-1 road win

Kamiak bettered its chance in qualifying for 4A district by putting away Mountlake Terrace 2-1 and moves into three-way tie first place in 4A WesCo standing with Edmonds-Woodway and Jackson.

In the first half, Knights senior forward Tyler Hawkinson (#11) broke through Hawks defense on the right side and was taken down inside Mountlake Terrace penalty area. Taking the penalty kick for Kamiak was senior Spencer Kienholz (#7) who shot the ball past Terrace GK Cody Paulson for an early 1-0 lead at the 7’ mark. Several late Hawks attacks before half time were effectively denied by Kamiak bend-but-don’t-break defense.

At the 62nd minute however, Terrace Manix Alvarez fed the Hawks sophomore Jonathan Alvarez (#9) for an equalizer. Substituting for senior Brian Bae (#12,) in came sophomore forward Jake Cummings (#9) whom answered Mountlake Terrace tying goal with the game-winner at 66’ mark in the form of an unassisted power shot at top left of penalty box after getting just enough separation from the Hawks defenders.

Earning the win, junior GK Austin Porter was solid in goal for Kamiak (3-2 league, 6-4-2 overall) with several saves. Cody Paulson was the Hawks goalie for first 15’ and gave up one goal while starter Ben Winters returned from a bloody nose to handle keeper duty the rest of game for Mountlake Terrace (1-4, 2-10-0.)
