The Snohomish County Sheriff’s office is warning residents of an IRS scam affecting Snohomish County Residents.
“We are receiving a steady stream of walk-ins and 911 calls about the scam,” the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office writes on its Facebook page.
According to the post, the scam begins with someone claiming to be an IRS agent calling a victim and saying he or she owes back taxes. Scammers sometimes have personal data, such as the last four digits of a social security number or a home address, that they use to try to convince their victims that they are actually with the IRS.
Other scammers will mail documents that look like authentic IRS documents and ask victims to fill in missing information.
If you are contacted by an IRS scammer, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office recommends you hang up immediately and contact the IRS directly to verify if you owe back taxes. If you receive a mailer, dispose of it securely and contact the IRS directly.
