With autumn’s falling leaves, along with the occasionally heavy rains, storm drains can clog and cause flooding. City of Mountlake Terrace officials are asking residents to help prevent local urban flooding by keeping storm drains clear of leaves and debris during this troublesome season.
The city is encouraging residents to locate storm drains on or near their property and help keep catch basin covers free of leaves and debris. Leaf debris can be disposed of with other yard waste.
Beginning on Monday, Oct. 21, the city will increase the frequency of street sweeping operations to keep up with the seasonal leaf drop. City staff will operate the street sweeper thirteen hours a day, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the next three to four weeks during the peak season for leaf drop. The goal of this increased effort is to clean up leaf litter and other debris before it enters into and clogs the storm drainage system, officials said.
