Hawks volleyball falls 3-1 to Mavericks

Hawks logo-2After claiming the Wesco League 3A regular season championship, the Mountlake Terrace High School girls volleyball team faltered in district postseason play as the squad fell short in earning a state tournament bid. The Hawks were defeated 3-1 by the Meadowdale Mavericks on Saturday.

Meadowdale kept the Hawks off balance throughout its 25-13, 17-25, 25-20, 25-14 victory in final day of the District 1 3A Volleyball Tournament at Glacier Peak High School.

With early-round upsets, the district tourney featured No. 4-seeded Ferndale and No. 7-seeded Oak Harbor in its championship match. Both schools earned WIAA 3A State Volleyball Tournament berths with its district play, leaving the top four Wesco regular season teams — Mountlake Terrace, Meadowdale, Everett and Stanwood — fighting for the district’s single remaining state tourney berth. The Mavericks grabbed the last state spot with victories over the Hawks and the Stanwood Spartans.

Terrace, while disappointed with missing out on a trip to the state championships, can take some solace in knowing their two losses in the district tournament were to state qualifiers. You can view the results of the district bracket here.

The Hawks finished the 2013 season with a 12-5 record. Their Wesco regular season championship was the first for a MTHS girls volleyball team in more than 30 years.
