Mountlake Terrace High School junior Syd Springberg was eliminated from the state wrestling championships at the Tacoma Dome after going 1-2 in matches on Friday.
Springberg, competing in the 170 lb. weight class at Mat Classic XXV, went down in a heartbreaker 9-8 in his first match of the day to Courtney Shavers of Oak Harbor. Shavers has since advanced to the semi-final round of the winners’ bracket.
In his second match of the day, Springberg defeated Brandon Proffitt of Mountain View (Vancouver) 4-0, but then couldn’t overcome the challenge of Nick Chandler of Mercer Island. Chandler picked up the victory over Springberg by pinfall at 4:48 of the match.
This was Springberg’s first qualification for Mat Classic competition; last year, as a sophomore, Springberg made it to the state tournament as an alternate, but did not see any competition. He was the only Hawk to qualify for the tournament this year.
