On a night when the Mountlake Terrace Hawks honored their two seniors, Avery Coleman and Taitumn Simbulan, it was an Oak Harbor junior that stole the spotlight.
Oak Harbor’s Chloe Wallace scored the only goal of the match on a header in the 22nd minute, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 victory over the Hawks in a Wesco League girls soccer contest played Tuesday at Edmonds Stadium.
Wallace’s goal came after a Wildcat corner kick that was headed straight up in the air inside Terrace’s six-yard box; Wallace, a defender who had moved forward for the corner kick, was in position to reach the headed ball and looped a shot over Hawks’ goalkeeper Sierra Sonko for the score.
The goal ignited an Oak Harbor attack that had been non-existent during the game’s first 20 minutes as the Wildcats had been taking a defensive posture, allowing Terrace to keep possession of the ball. The Hawks got off three shots during those first 20 minutes, all of which were saved by Wildcats’ goalkeeper Tiana Jackson.
Following the Wallace goal, Oak Harbor attacked more freely, getting off 11 more shots during the remainder of the match in comparison to just one for the Hawks.
After the game, Mountlake Terrace Coach Alvin Little and the underclassmen on the squad honored the team’s only seniors, Coleman and Simbulan. Little thanked the two for their four years of play with the Hawks; the two were then presented with gifts and flowers from their teammates and their families.
In other Terrace sports on Tuesday, the Hawks’ volleyball team was also shutout by Oak Harbor 3-0 at Oak Harbor High School while the Terrace boys tennis team lost 4-1 by the Lake Stevens Vikings at Mountlake Terrace High School.
