Hawks sports roundup for Monday: Softball loses to Glacier Peak, boys soccer falls to Shorecrest

MTHSHawks logoGlacier Peak’s Callie Bircher pitched a complete game, struck out 11 Hawk batters, gave up no walks, and helped herself out by going 2-for-4 from the plate with two doubles and two RBI to pick up a win for the Grizzlies 9-3 over Mountlake Terrace in Wesco 3A South Conference softball action on Monday.

Bircher and teammate Nina Kim, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI, led the Grizzlies offensive attack as the team pounded out 11 hits against Hawk pitchers Maddy Kristjanson and Kira Doan.

“They came out hitting and got a lot of hits, but we should have limited the number of runs that they got,” said MTHS Coach Shannon Rasmussen. “We made a couple of big mistakes and let them get a couple extra bases at least. And then it got out of hand.”

Terrace fell behind 9-0 after just three innings and, even though they held Glacier Peak scoreless for the remainder of the game, was never able to climb back into contention for a victory.

“It was the tale of two games. We lost the first three innings and we won the last four,” Rasmussen said. “I would have loved to have gotten a win today, but I also knew that we were coming in (with) some girls out of position.”

As its spring break for the Edmonds School District, the team was down a couple players who are gone this week. It continues a pattern of Rasmussen not being able to field a full squad as eligibility issues, injuries and player obligations have plagued the team so far this season.

Despite an 0-2 start in Wesco League play and a 3-6 overall record, there is no panic among the Terrace players or coaching staff. Rasmussen said that having a full roster will help the team pick up some needed victories as the season progresses. “After spring break we’re good to go and we’ll have our core 11 to 12 girls that we’ll have for the rest of the year,” Rasmussen noted.

In other MTHS action on Monday, the boys soccer team fell to Shorecrest 6-2 in a high-scoring affair at Shoreline Stadium. The team will meet Everett Wednesday, April 9, at Lynnwood High School at 7:30 p.m.
