Taking advantage of set piece opportunities, the Meadowdale Mavericks boys soccer team scored three goals in a span of five minutes early in the second half and defeated the Mountlake Terrace Hawks 4-0 in a Wesco League 3A South Conference match played at Lynnwood High School on Tuesday.
The win lifted the Mavericks’ league record to 7-3 and put them into a third-place tie in the conference with Shorecrest. The Hawks fell to 3-6-1 in the Wesco League and were eliminated from reaching any District 1 postseason action.
Meadowdale began its second-half scoring spurt when senior Tristan Springer headed in the rebound of a shot that bounced off the Mountlake Terrace crossbar in the 53rd minute. Maverick Austin Panek had found the woodwork on the play that started from a corner kick.
Just three minutes later, Springer scored again, knocking the ball in the goal off a Maverick throw-in. Teammate Stuart Smith closed out the scoring one minute later with a 25-yard drive that deflected off a Hawk defender and found its way into the back of the goal.
“I thought it was a scrappy effort by both teams,” said Mavericks’ Head Coach Wade Foley. “The Mountlake Terrace team is much improved. We were really fortunate on a couple really good crosses and got on the end of those.”
While Meadowdale took advantage of its opportunities to score, the Hawks couldn’t convert the chances that were presented to them throughout the game. On their closest effort, Terrace hit the post with a shot in the 17th minute of the match.
MTHS Head Coach George George Dremousis was a little frustrated with his squad following the match for lapses in concentration on defense. “Mental mistakes will kill you,” he explained. “It was a close game, but they scored on set pieces. We practice and practice it, then in games we just kind of shut down and lose our mark.”
Terrace trailed at the half 1-0 on a Mavericks’ goal by Panek in the 22nd minute of a throw-in .
Each team has three matches remaining in the 2014 regular season. On Friday, May 2, Meadowdale will host Glacier Peak in a big match-up at Edmonds Stadium, while Terrace will travel to Shoreline Stadium and take on Shorewood.
In other MTHS sports action on Tuesday, the softball team held off Marysville-Getchell in a tight pitchers’ duel 2-1, the baseball team overpowered Shorecrest 10-0, and the girls tennis team put together its best team outing of the season in defeating Marysville-Getchell 6-1.
